Greece Holiday Guide

Balos, Crete, Greece #1
Image by Christos Andronis via Flickr

Greece is a top travel destination worldwide. With a plethora of things to see and do, it is no wonder more than 15 million people a year go on holiday to Greece. If the beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches, sunny, clear weather were not enough to draw you in, how about the exciting nightlife and historical sites? Mainland Greece and the Greek Islands are equally popular. Popular spots include Crete, Corfu, Athens, Rhodes and Thessaloniki. If you prefer spots that are more out of the way and less populated by tourists and the sorts of events and activities that appeal to them, you can find quieter, less travelled places of beauty in Greece as well.

One reason that makes Greece an ideal holiday destination is its climate. Greece has very long summers and short winters. Between the months of April and November, you will find Greece to be hot and dry, but not so much that you can not enjoy the outdoors. Greece does see rain during this season, but it comes and goes so quickly that you will enjoy the chance to cool down. From the middle of July to the middle of August, you might find Greece a little unbearable since this is the typically the warmest time of the year. During the months of May and June, as well as, September and October you will find Greece at its finest. It is not too hot and not too humid. These are the best months to visit.

The bulk of travelers come to Greece between April and October. The traffic peaks July through August. When the tourist season ends, the country’s tourist systems take a break. Athens and Thessaloniki are the arrival points for the bulk of the international flights. But charter and low-budget flights also come in through other European cities and the smaller islands and tiny cities on the mainland of Greece. The tourist season puts many industries on full throttle. Once it ends, things are much quieter.

Expect your hotel accommodations to be simple in Greece. You will be staying in a diminutive air-conditioned room with a balcony. The room will be clean and acceptable. In the larger cities, the hotels will be more luxurious, but you likely will not feel that you got what you paid for. You can also find luxury hotel accommodations on the islands that are populated with tourists, but again the value just is not there. Even the simple hotels have an online presence and you can likely arrange your reservations over the internet or email. You can also send a fax. You can also use a hotel booking service or travel agent.

Greece is not known for its major cosmopolitan flair. You usually will not be able to do major shopping while on the islands. What you can expect is specialty products from local artisans which can not be beat. These things include hand-made lace and jewelry, leather goods, pottery, local wines, hand woven rugs and much more. When you are in Greece, expect to eat very well since eating out is a major way of life. Most restaurants are called “Taverna” or “Estiatorio” and they are easily found in any area you visit. And if you speak English, then you will not have any issues with a language barrier since most people speak the language.

Door to Heaven (Trongsa, Bhutan)

Bhutan, the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon, is a land shrouded in mystery and steeped in historical tradition. That is never more obvious than when you coincide your Bhutan trekking vacation by one of the country’s Buddhist tsechu festivals often called tsechus. There are festivals all year long and some tour corporations provide tailored Bhutan trekking itineraries to reap the benefits of the competition calendar.

Historical past of Tsechus

The Bhutanese are a religious folks and the tsechu is a very important event of their culture. While there are many of those festivals all year long, they are every one celebrated in honour of Guru Rimpoche who introduced Buddhism to the country within the eighth and 9th century.

The story goes that Padmasambhava (the human being manifestation of Guru Rimpoche) visited Bhutan as a way to give assist to an ailing king with performing a collection of rites and dances. The extremely opening tsechu introduced the Guru Rinpoche in eight totally different varieties, every by means of a distinct dance, and it’s from these dances that the ‘Chams’, which glorify the job of Padmasambhava, evolved.

It is mentioned that Guru Rinpoche carried out all his nice deeds on the 10th day of the lunar month, from which the tsechu’s literal that means, ‘day ten’, comes. The tradition is followed and every event is held on the tenth day of the month taken from the lunar calendar. Each district holds their very own celebration at different occasions of the year so it is doable to come across more than one on a Bhutan trekking holiday.

Rites of the Tsechu

Recognized for his or her distinctive and endearing heat, the Bhutanese folks love the symbolic celebration of their tsechu and your entire town or town will grow to be concerned in what can often run over a number of days. Whereas undoubtedly non secular in their meaning, they’re a joyous occasion by intricate dances being carried out not solely by the monks, but the native lay individuals as well.

Some tsechus also embrace a blessing from a excessive lama known as a ‘wang’, which is claimed to disperse impurities. Those that witness this blessing are given a colored thread to tie around their necks to symbolise the ritual cleansing. In Bhutan, trekking through the villages, even when you do not come across a festival, you’ll often observe locals through the remnants of those threads around their necks.

In contrast to the monks, are the numbers of the Atsaras, who are the Bhutanese equal of the clown. These intriguing characters put on startlingly expressive masks they usually taunt and goad the monks and try to distract the crowds with their antics. Bhutan’s religion is extraordinarily sacred to their way of life and the Atsaras are the one folks permitted to mock the rites, and solely throughout tsechu.

A few tsechus embrace less dancing but extra readings from a prescribed text. The villagers all collect collectively at a temple and take part in these readings whereas, on the identical time, imbibing in a robust alcoholic beverage.

Tsechus are crucial in Bhutanese tradition and if villagers have moved away to another area, or to the town, they are anticipated to return to their extremely own village to take part within the celebrations. It’s a real social occasion and an opportunity to decorate up in their best garments and jewellery to enjoy helpful food and the good firm of their fellow villagers. Travelers, Bhutan trekking, are welcomed into the festivities with the normal warmth and pleasure of the residents and it is not attainable not to get swept up in the magic of the occasion.

Being someone who has seen a lot of the great places in in Bright, camping in Bright still is hands down one of the most fun things to do in Bright, Victoria (in my opinion). With the beautiful bush setting, surrounded by the highest peaks in Victoria, there is simply no better way to “rough it up” in Bright.

Camping in Bright comes in many different shapes and forms. For one, there are many great caravan parks and camping grounds available in the area, ranging anywhere from Bright to Porepunkah, and even out to Mt Beauty, each town has a luxury place to camp in style, most with available electricity, and amenities. Mt Beauty Holiday Park is one that I cherish, having spent almost every single Christmas from the time I was a toddler until my early teens camped on the Kiewa River underneath the imposing bulk of Mt Bogong. This was a great way to experience a family holiday, with the owners of the caravan park being extremely hospitable, however, this is definitely not an option for those who want to head to the bush, and “rough it up” a little.

More wild camping is available in the National Parks, with camping being permitted in most areas within 200 meters of any road. Of course, this is subject to change, it is recommended to check the Parks Victoria website for further information on where you can and can’t camp, as this changes seasonally.

For some more quiet and secluded camping, the Dargo High Plains is ideal. This area is less popular in most seasons, which is great for getting back to nature and quiet time with your husband, wife, and family. Around Mt Hotham, all the way up the Great Alpine Road camping is available. Including Dimantina Hut, which is in one of the most perfect spots to view the highest peaks in Victoria. Imagine having that morning cup of coffee whilst gazing over the striking peaks that make up this amazing view.

If you are up for a little bit of a walk, there are several popular locations for camping around the Bogong High Plains. With just a few kilometers walk off most main roads, Wallace Hut, Langford Gap and a few other areas are great for taking yourself and the family camping. Once you see it for yourself, you will understand why Wallace Hut is one of the most popular all throughout the year with both families and avid hikers. Also being the most photographed Hut in Australia, one night staying at this hut, and you simply will not want to leave.

Yet another great place to spend a weekend away camping in Bright, Mountain Creek camping grounds, located just at the bottom of the beautiful Mt Bogong is defiantly the place to be. With a comfortable camping area, with what my partner would consider necessities, such as toilets and running water from Mountain Creek, makes your stay that much better. Although, My Bogong can get a lot of foot traffic in the summer months, laying under the stars at night with Mountain Creek bubbling softly in the background will take you mind off any troubles.

I could go on and on about all the areas in Bright that you could stay at. But I would make a few people a little upset with spilling their secret spots. I have many of my only little spots I like to go to either spend the night or sit and take in country Victoria. But the best part of this slice of Victoria is to just explore! Find your own little bit of paradise to come back to again and again. Packed already? Come and see Bright Victoria.

5 Things You Must Do In Sharm el Sheikh

Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt): Naama Bay Promenade
Image via Wikipedia

Sharm is Egypt’s oldest and most well liked holiday location. Its fantastic weather appeals to people from Europe and the rest of the world all year round. Throughout the day, holiday makers relax on the beaches or by the pool and through the night, Sharm el Sheikh Old Town and Na’ama Bay come to life with a lot of bars, cafes and restaurants offering something for everyone.

In the daytime, for all those who prefer something to do, there are a number of trips to be had and these are generally five of the recommended trips to be had. One of the first things that seduced visitors to the area was the fantastic sea life and you’re able to explore the coral reefs with a snorkeling trip. The most in demand places for the day tours are the Ras Mohammed National Park or Jackson Reef in the Straits of Tiran. It does not matter which excursion you chose, you won’t be let down.

A couple of hours drive is Mount Sinai and there are regular day trips taking travellers to the highest point in the Sinai to see the sun rise over the desert landscape. The scenery close to the mountains is awesome and people deciding on the early start won’t be disappointed. Another in demand destination in the desert is the breathtaking Colour Canyon. Visiting by off road vehicles, tourists can look at the popular shapes and colours and rock formations of the Colour Canyon.

Cairo is always a well liked excursion from Sharm and frequent tours by air and bus take tourists off to the Egyptian capital. The day trip starts off with a visit to the Cairo Museum which is rife with ancient pieces such as the widely known Mask of Tutankhamen. From the museum, the next stop is a spot of lunch of a Nile river boat just before moving on to Giza and the Pyramids. The Sphinx is a brief bus ride away and when you finish spending time there, there is still time to have a look at a perfume shop and a papyrus shop just before travelling back to Sharm el Sheikh.

Not wanting to miss out on an Egyptian experience, an additional popular Sharm tour is an early evening camel ride out in the desert then a Bedouin supper. Dining in the still of the desert beneath a starlit sky is the best way to wind down following a day lying on the beach.

Vacationing and Budgeting in Las Vegas .

Just because finances are tight  doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a vacation.   Some families are just scraping by and others are struggling and just need some good ideas.  If this situation sounds all too familiar , a summer vacation may be the last thing on your mind .  If you and your family are concerned in going on a summer vacation you still can in spite  of your financial situation.

When setting a budget  for a summer vacation, it is important that you do not limit yourself .  There are too many families   who search for a vacation destination entirely based on price of travel and rooms .  Instead of first searching for low-priced travel and rooms , consider all the  fun and entertaining activites   you may want to  take advantage of   while on vacation.  Budget in other areas rather than room and board  if you have to. Once you  intimately examine the hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, or beaches that your selected  destination has to offer, you can easily  learn  areas that can save you  money.

Another idea is  to takeplaces that are discounted in the summer.  Once such destination is Las Vegas .  The heat  keeps some people away because they like to walk the Las Vegas strip  and it’s too hot for most people  .  What about those that like to either  stay inside  or when they do go outside they like to have fun  in the water   at the best pools in Las Vegas

Others  may consider the list of Las Vegas shows and just choose the shows that fit into your budget and eat simple  meals.  Either way there is a possibility of making it happen if you plan accordingly .   Of course   some of the  more expensive shows  are  upwardof one hundred dollars like “O” at Bellagio and Mystere, Phantom of the Opera and so on.  But  there is also plenty of entertainment to fit into any budget like an old showroom lounge. In fact there are quite a few free shows in Las Vegas if you just look.

What Else?

If the beach sounds like the  vacation of your dreams  , you have a number of options.   There are popular beaches   for those on a budget in the United States which may include, but are not limited to, Virginia Beach, Pensacola Beach, and Long Beach. You can plan a beach vacation in the Caribbean or overseas; however, the cost of travel will likely increase the cost  of your vacation.

Virginia Beach, Long Beach, Daytona Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Long Beach are all known as vacation “hot spots.”  Many individuals automatically assume that the most popular beach destinations are out of their price range  . While some facilities and activities  may be  expensive , there are ways for you to vacation there on a budget.  Instead of staying at an ocean-side resort, you could save a large amount of money by  staying at an inland hotel  . The same can be said for restaurants, bars, and event centers.  Almost everything is more expensive on the shoreline.

If you are a golfing family , you may want to examine  the golf resorts in and around the United States.  Many popular golf courses are set in Myrtle Beach, Newport Beach, and Scottsdale.  If you are  trying to save money  , you can easily benefit from buying a resort package.  Many  of the most popular   golf resorts, in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean offer packages that  stay and play deals that include hotel, golf, dining, and more  .

You may recognise many of the above mentioned summer vacation destinations .  Popular vacation destinations do not have to be too costly  .  entirely by cutting a few corners , you could be vacationing along side the rest of America, even while on a budget .

A Short Introduction To Vacations On Skye

Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, from the East s...
Image via Wikipedia

Skye is the most suitable vacation destination for walkers and water sports enthusiasts. Set amongst a collection of islands called the Inner Hebrides a vacation on the Isle of Skye is an incredible and unique experience. Large numbers of folk visit the Scottish Highlands to bathe their eyes in the spectacular scenery and many agree that the Inner Hebrides feature the top-grade and most majestic. In the following article I discuss at some of the factors which make the Isle of Skye is such a exciting place to take a short break .

Places To Visit On Skye

Although not actually situated on the island no visit would be complete without a day trip to Eilean Donan Castle. One of Scotland’s most photographed monuments the castle has also appeared in numerous blockbusters including the 1985 cult classic “Highlander”. The castle is privately owned but, for a fee , you are allowed to wander around the well equipped castle or enjoy a guided tour. The castle is only fifteen minutes from the Skye Bridge.

The only real mountain range in the UK is The Cuillin which offer demanding opportunities for mountain climbing . In total the rough and ready Black Cuillins has twelve munros with Sgurr Alasdair being the highest at 992 m (3,255 ft).

The Isle of Skye only has two Corbetts  (Glamaig is the highest) and both are located in the Red Hills. The Black Cuillin are bare rock at their summits whereas the Red Hills (often incorrectly named the Red Cuillin)  are much softer with flora to the summits .

If you want to indulge in some climbing please seek advice as it can be incredibly dangerous, especially if you are ill equipped. Too many people find themselves in difficulties following a dramatic change in the weather, always plan for the worst. You can access the Black Cuillin from Glen Brittle and the Red Hills from Glen Sligachan.

Tourist Attractions are Bright Water Visitor Centre, the Talisker distillery, the Glendale Toy Museum, Giant Macaskill Museum, Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles, Skye Museum of Island Life, Colbost Croft Museum and Dunvegan Castle. The stronghold of the Macleods of Dunvegan and Harris, Dunvegan Castle, is dramatically situated upon a cliff-top. The Isle of Skye has a mild climate and is much more green than most other Scottish islands and this is made extravagantly clear in the colourful castle gardens, you will also discover a craft shop and a restaurant which help make it perfect for a day out.

Looking over to the Isle of Raasay, Broadford is a seaside village which features a selection of much needed facilities but is also rather nice spot to spend a few of hours. Broadford has some breathtaking sea views however the top port of call should be the petite , but fantastically interesting, Skye Serpentarium Reptile World where you really can get some hands on experience!

Hotel accommodation on the Isle of Skye appear everywhere and it isrelatively easy to find one however finding one with the vacancies sign outside is a different story altogether. It is important to remember that it is a good idea to make your bookings as early as possible when doing so please take a look at our listings of Isle of Skye hotels .
