London – Buckingham Palace

The Buckingham Palace in England.
Image via Wikipedia

Though one of the most popular tourist attractions in London, Buckingham Palace is still the official residence of Britain’s monarchy, as it has been since Queen Victoria’s designation in 1837.

Much of the building was constructed as early as 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham. Buckingham House (as it was then known) was purchased in 1762 by George III, who used it as a private residence. Over the following 75 years the house was expanded to form three wings around a central courtyard. See 1000’s of London Videos.

When Queen Victoria discovered the lack of several ‘necessary’ rooms – such as a formal ballroom, a nursery, visitor’s bedrooms and others – major additions were undertaken, including adding an entire wing to form a quadrangle. The Marble Arch was moved to Hyde Park, where it still resides near Speaker’s Corner. With the refacing using Portland stone in 1913, the palace received its last major change.

Still actively used as both residence and offices, over 50,000 guests and invited diplomats visit per year who interact with over 400 individuals for whom this is ‘the office’. Nevertheless, several parts of the palace are open to the public.

During August and September, the West Wing admits visitors who can view the State Rooms. At other times of the year, various parts are open, where tourists can view spectacular jewels, dressing gowns, furniture and the building itself.

The Queen’s Gallery near the Royal Mews (stables and, later, a garage) is open year-round and has an ever changing display of objects owned by ‘the British nation’. Here you can see original paintings by Rubens, Vermeer, Canaletto and other great artists.

The Royal Mews are also open to the public, where you can see 30 horses and the golden State Coach. The four-ton coach, pulled by eight horses, is used for coronations and other state functions.

Outside, the 40-acre garden presents a peaceful walk full of well-tended flowers and shrubs and a superb view of the lake.

Of course, the major attraction outside is the ‘Changing of the Guard’, or as it’s more formally known: the Guard Mounting. Household Troops have guarded the Sovereign since 1660, but today the task is carried out at Buckingham by soldiers drawn mostly from the regiments of the Foot Guards.

A Guards’ band plays a traditional military march as one set of guards replaces the other. When the Queen is in residence, four sentries stand at the front of the building. While she’s away, the contingent is reduced to two.

In their traditional red tunic and bearskins, with the distinctive helmet, the guards are highly trained to avoid interacting with the many visitors who try to distract them. Occasionally, other Commonwealth units participate in guard duty, as do the Scots Guards and the Brigade of Gurkhas.

The Guard Mounting ceremony is performed at 11:30 am and lasts for about 45 minutes, though it’s skipped sometimes owing to inclement weather. The Palace location is easily accessible by the tube (the London Underground subway system). Green Park is to the north of Buckingham Palace, Victoria Station and St. James Park stations are to the south.

Travel Safety Basics

Goodbye MaXjet! Maxjet Boeing 767-238 N250MY (...
Image via Wikipedia

Travellers, young and old, should know what to expect in their trips, at least, with the things in association with safety. Vigilance is always an essential attribute to have especially if you are going on a journey to a land foreign or not familiar to you. To a feasible extent, a vacationer should do all he can to get clued up and ready for the journey. All sorts of detail must be taken into consideration.

Prior to the trip, the traveller has to make certain that all important legal papers like will, power of attorney, insurance, and the like should be handed over to somebody reliable. Bringing legal documents with you in your travels is, more often than not, a risky and wrong thing to do. If you know that your legal documents are in good hands, you will not only have sense of security in your travels, handling probable crises will be much more manageable as well.

The itinerary of your trip is a very important part of your personal safety. There are lots of factors to take into account when it comes to keeping your self and your belongings safe and secure.

It is very much recommended for vacationers to present and register their trip plans with the authorities. By doing so, finding and getting in touch with the person in case of emergencies will be much more achievable. Some places even present the assistance without any charge, if this is the case, you should make use of this. This is helpful when you are needed to be told of the happenings regarding your home country and the persons you left behind back home.

Price is directly proportional to the amount of protection that you can have. For example, you’re by far much safer if you’re to stay in a larger and more prominent hotel. Such establishments for vacationers have superb security systems that are definitely advantageous. Furthermore, staying on the 2nd floor up to the midpoint of the hotel building is said to be more secure.

Using credit cards when travelling is advised. This poses lesser risks than carrying cash while travelling. Yet, every tourist should carry some local currency on hand. It not only adds to the convenience but may also be handy in various scenarios. It is best to notify your credit card company of your vacation beforehand and in an event you lost, misplace, or have your credit card stolen, contact your credit card company at once to give an account about the incident.

Buying travel insurance – though considered by many people as needless expenditure – is, on the contrary, important when going abroad. With the right travel insurance policy, which you can only acquire with an in depth travel insurance comparison, you get peace of mind and protection from various damages. The insurance coverage keeps you safe from financial damages brought about by random events like illness, accidents, luggage loss, and cancellations.

How About Visiting Wales This Year?

Bodant gardens North wales UK

As a dyed-in-the-wool English person, I have to confess a passion for the Welsh and for my trips to Wales. The areas that are particularly appealing to me are the scenic routes that I love when visiting friends who live in the north near Anglesey. The people are passionate and on the whole friendly towards me – an outsider, providing some of the finest cuisines available in the UK. So I was quite shocked recently when I read a blog post on the website of a leading takeaway supplier.

It seems difficult to understand, but it would appear that the Welsh are the most likely customers of takeaway food in the whole of the UK. If you want to spend your holidays in Wales, you could follow the lead of many of the other members of the population and get a takeaway. This could be a little challenging if you have decided to stay in one of the many holiday cottages in Wales, and decide to spend you time in a place that is far from civilization.

There has been a massive increase in the numbers of Welsh people ordering takeaways, according to takeaway specialists Just-Eat. It is particularly in the big cities like Cardiff, where we have seen many surfers ordering takeaways online.

Managing Director David Buttress who was born in Cardiff said “It is great to see my fellow Cardiffians embracing the online ordering concept and indulging in the slightly unusual things to do in Wales. The massive growth we are seeing in Cardiff is really exciting and especially pleasing for me, being a local lad.”

One takeaway company feeling the growth, is City Pizza on City Road in Cardiff. Mr Kakay, boss of City Pizza said, “The orders that have come online from Just Eat have been amazing. I became a member in 2006, but it is only recently that the business has really started to move. I am very pleased that I joined the business to the service online. My customers find it an easy service to use, and this then is easy for me.”

Scotland is an incredibly popular destination for vacations because it is greatly suitable for a diverse range of vacations.  If you enjoy breaks in the countryside the landscape ranges from masses of astonishing coastal destinations to mountains and woodlands found further inland perfect for ramblers, mountain climbers, hill-walkers, hikers.  Below I  introduce Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

Edinburgh features some of the most interesting galleries and museums in the whole of the UK and accessible from the city is an impressive collection of castles, fortified houses, historical buildings and country homes which are well worth a visit. Edinburgh is a city which is composed of two parts, the Old and the New Towns, which are immensely different, but both are a World Heritage Site.

Even though it is the capital city it is surprisingly green and within a short distance you will discover yourself amid the most beautiful countryside. Two of the best green areas in the heart of the city are the Royal Botanic Gardens and Princes Street Gardens. Situated along Princes Street you will find the usual high street shops, in the West End you will find funky boutiques, in the New Town you will discover plenty of designer products and in the Old Town there are lots of independent merchants, artisans and designers.

The city is renowned the world over for it massive number of festivals. referred to as the festival capital of Europe the year’s calendar is jam packed with events and festivals throughout each and every month of the year. August is the busiest month, with no less than eight festivals. In August it is very difficult to find an Edinburgh Hotel which has a vacancy, so book your room early.

The Edinburgh festival year ends, or starts, with Hogmanay, the largest New Year party in the world. As well known is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (comedy) and other festivals include; the Festival of Politics, Art Festival, Edinburgh Mela, Jazz Festival and more.

A Word About Accommodation In Edinburgh

As mentioned earlier the worst month to find rooms is August when nearly all Edinburgh Hotels are fully booked. Sadly the same could be said about the time around Christmas and New Year which is often booked a full twelve months in advance, so it really is vitally important to book early!

The city has a plentiful number of guest house and hotel accommodation ranging from pretty cheap inn to the surprisingly lavish top of the range 5 star luxury country mansion hotels with a good deal of character and charm. So whatever price you can afford you will surely find the perfect accommodation for you online.

Birmingham's skyline viewed from the south-wes...
Image via Wikipedia

These days more tourists are looking for new holiday destinations which offer something completely different or, at the very least something other than the popular holiday of sun and sand. During these difficult times, often called the credit crunch, the majority of us are, unfortunately finding that they have dramatically less money for expenditure on a holiday and are, annoyingly, forced to shaving corners to save money. A way of doing it is to search out a cheaper destination. In the following article I introduce the reader to Birmingham, a city in the UK. With the dollar and euro so strong against the English pound Birmingham hotels are cheaper than last year.

The city of Birmingham is situated in the county of England known as the West Midlands  and the residents of the city are called “Brummies”. Birmingham’s dialect sounds like many other northern English accents and it can be very difficult to fully comprehend what is being said a struggle which is exaggerated if you have not heard it before. Happily the vast majority of Brummies are helpful, kind and polite and do their utmost to explain clearly so if you need to don’t be afraid to engage in conversation about directions and help or guidance in choosing  Birmingham bed & breakfast accommodation.

Birmingham possesses  a healthy number of visitor attractions which include some incredibly informative museums and galleries, for example the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and the new Thinktank  which is in the Eastside. The city of Birmingham also has an impressive number of square miles of parkland and woodland, Sutton Park  is the largest with 970 hectares it is also the largest urban nature reserve in the United Kingdom and even Europe.

The city of Birmingham features a varied and vibrant nightlife with many restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and bars. You will discover most in one of the city’s squares, Victoria Square, Chamberlain Square, Centenary Square, Rotunda Square, St Martin’s Square, the historic Old Square at Corporation Street and the Gas Street Basin. Gas Street Basin is the hub of Birmingham’s intricate canal network. The city has about thirty two miles of canal waterways with a total of eight canals which were created during the 18th century and remained in industrial use nearly until the end of the 20th century. Today the area has been renovated and regenerated and is now a good quality tourist attraction.

Alternatively why not think about hiring Birmingham apartments. If you If you are currently planning a vacation in Birmingham you should know that Birmingham Airport is roughly eight miles away from the the city center just off the A45 and near the M42 (junction 6). You will easily find a useful number of hotels and b & b’s nearby the airport.

Some of Britains Best Theme Parks

at Alton Towers

Well there isn’t really many choice in the matter as you either live to far away from your favourite or just think going to the likes of Disney World is a far better way to spend the cash. What choices to we have here in the UK?

Alton Towers

The biggest one is easily going to be Alton Towers and  houses the rides like Nemesis, Ripsaw, Rita and the kids favourite Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This is likely to be the best one but it is also going to be the busiest one.

The Wet, Thorpe Park

This park is all about coasters mixed with water with the likes of Tidal Wave and Nemesis Inferno. This park also contains the first ever ride based on a horror movie and comes in the name of SAW.

Chessington and Legoland are the two that mainly focuses in on the kids. Chessington is a Zoo as well as a theme park and Legoland not only houses rides but a land where you can look at some of the best Lego ever built including a London City Centre made entirely of the Lego bricks themselves. Drayton Manor also exists and this is a lot like Chessington apart from it might contain a few rides the older generations can enjoy too.

What do you do if you do not like theme parks? The answer is simple, why not go up into the country and stay there for a few days on one of those relaxing family holidays UK. Wales is a lovely spot to go to where you can look at Britain for its true wonder and beauty. Of course you could just go up to Cardiff Castle on family days out. Either way, Wales should certainly be on your list of must places to go when you head out on a short break to Britain.

What to Expect From East London

East London
Image via Wikipedia

The city of East London is located on the southeast coast of South Africa in Eastern Cape Province. This city boasts of having the only river port in the country. This is because of the fact that it is located between the Nahoon and Buffalo Rivers. This is a very friendly city with a relaxed life style. This area features a delightful subtropical climate and warm water in the Indian Ocean both of which are most enjoyable. The English language is spoken here even though IsiXhosa is the major language spoken.

Gonubi Beach

Located 25 kilometres north of East London – Gonubie Beach is linked to the city itself by the n2. Gonubie Beach enjoys international blue flag status, awarded to beaches that meet a high standard for environmental protection and safety practices. Gonubie Beach features a convenient main parking lot which is linked to the beach area by an expansive wooden boardwalk. Here strollers pass lovely man-made tidal pools and can enjoy stunning views of plentiful indigenous vegetation.

Nahoon Beach

The favourite destination in East London is Nahoon Beach. Its clean and open sandy areas stretch for kilometres. It was named after a local Xhosa chief and its dramatic waves provide the site of regional surfing meets. You’ll also feel at home just fishing or swimming.

Orient Beach

A favourite among tourists is Quigney’s suburban esplanade in East London. Nearby, Orient Beach provides convenient walks to hotels and shops. The Friends of East London Aquarium is the longest operating aquarium for the southern African viewing public. For over 75 years it has provided an important role in educating about the critical function ocean life plays in our ecosystem. It helps injured marine animals, too—hundreds of them are treated and released back to their natural environment annually. The lovely and spacious exhibit areas display marine life from the region.

Keeping in mind the fact that the Southern Right Whales migrates southward down the coast of South Africa to their artic feeding areas and come close to the shore of East London the aquarium build an eleven meter high platform that is just above the surf. This has resulted the visitors a magnificent view of the animals as they go about in the bay. City of York

Image via Wikipedia

The historic city of York can be found where the rivers Ouse and Foss join each other and has been an important city for nearly 2,000 years now.  The Romans founded the city in 71 AD and the town has grown and was at one time going to be the capital of England.  However, King Richard II who wished for this to happen was deposed before it could be done.

Certainly there is so much history to be discovered about this wonderful city and you should set aside several days to take in all the sights when you stay in York. Here are some of the city’s attractions for your shortlist.

1.     York Minister – This is England’s largest surviving medieval building and is the largest cathedral in northern Europe. It has dominated the skyline of York for over 800 years and has some magnificent gothic features.

Although you do not have to pay for entry into the main part of the Minister there is a small admission fee to climb the central tower and witness the spectacular city views it offers. The climb up (and back!) is long but the views make it well worthwhile.

2.    Jorvik Viking Centre – Celebrating York’s Viking days, which were previously discovered in a an archaeological dig in the Coppergate area of the city. The artefacts they found, including tools and clothing, date back over a thousand years. The time capsule ride attempts to recreate Viking life and travel back in time and visit a reconstructed Viking settlement. As you travel you have the chance to view some of the well preserved 10th Century buildings that were discovered during the time of the archaeological dig.

3.     York Castle Museum – This is a very popular museum with visitors to the city and offers them a chance to view what life has been like throughout the centuries in Britain. Originally founded in 1938 one has the chance to wander through historical periods of British life through detailed sets of the time that have been lovingly recreated using many original articles.

4.    National Railway Museum – Probably the largest and most comprehensive railway museum in the world. Through wandering around this wonderful museum one can learn about the history of railways and the way they have been used as transport. The museum is the home of Stephenson’s Rocket and the Mallard being the fastest steam locomotive in the world still today.

For something a little more unusual make sure you book on the York Ghost Trail. And go back to the city’s darker days.

Book your York hotel or guesthouse here.
