These days more tourists are looking for new holiday destinations which offer something completely different or, at the very least something other than the popular holiday of sun and sand. During these difficult times, often called the credit crunch, the majority of us are, unfortunately finding that they have dramatically less money for expenditure on a holiday and are, annoyingly, forced to shaving corners to save money. A way of doing it is to search out a cheaper destination. In the following article I introduce the reader to Birmingham, a city in the UK. With the dollar and euro so strong against the English pound Birmingham hotels are cheaper than last year.

The city of Birmingham is situated in the county of England known as the West Midlands  and the residents of the city are called “Brummies”. Birmingham’s dialect sounds like many other northern English accents and it can be very difficult to fully comprehend what is being said a struggle which is exaggerated if you have not heard it before. Happily the vast majority of Brummies are helpful, kind and polite and do their utmost to explain clearly so if you need to don’t be afraid to engage in conversation about directions and help or guidance in choosing  Birmingham bed & breakfast accommodation.

Birmingham possesses  a healthy number of visitor attractions which include some incredibly informative museums and galleries, for example the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and the new Thinktank  which is in the Eastside. The city of Birmingham also has an impressive number of square miles of parkland and woodland, Sutton Park  is the largest with 970 hectares it is also the largest urban nature reserve in the United Kingdom and even Europe.

The city of Birmingham features a varied and vibrant nightlife with many restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and bars. You will discover most in one of the city’s squares, Victoria Square, Chamberlain Square, Centenary Square, Rotunda Square, St Martin’s Square, the historic Old Square at Corporation Street and the Gas Street Basin. Gas Street Basin is the hub of Birmingham’s intricate canal network. The city has about thirty two miles of canal waterways with a total of eight canals which were created during the 18th century and remained in industrial use nearly until the end of the 20th century. Today the area has been renovated and regenerated and is now a good quality tourist attraction.

Alternatively why not think about hiring Birmingham apartments. If you If you are currently planning a vacation in Birmingham you should know that Birmingham Airport is roughly eight miles away from the the city center just off the A45 and near the M42 (junction 6). You will easily find a useful number of hotels and b & b’s nearby the airport.

An interesting history of Tahiti holidays

Tahiti holidays

One of the greatest holiday destinations in the world is Tahiti in the South Pacific. But it might not have been so except for the rebellion that occurred on the Bounty.

The wonderful travel destination of Tahiti was born and it has been much loved by tourists ever since.

Tahiti continues to be chosen for movies because of its gorgeous islands and inhabitants.

However these days the focus is more on luxury than defiance.

“Couples Retreat” and other films has seen a surge of interest in Tahiti holidays.

Popular Tahiti accommodation includes over-water bungalows and there is a noticeable absence of high-rise apartments.

The thatched roof bungalows often feature see-through glass floors that give visitors a one of a kind scene of the ocean.

If all you want to do on your Tahiti holiday is dive in the hotel pool and devour a novel then you’ll be more than happy. But Tahiti offers so much more.

Package holidays in Tahiti can include 4WD explorations, art lessons, cooking, fishing and dive excursions.

Paul Gauguin, an impressionist painter, spent the last years of his life in Tahiti before he died in 1903.

It’s perhaps his lasting influence which today sees many Tahiti holidaymakers crouching at easels with canvas and pastels trying to capture the beauty of the islands.

His inspiration is still alive today as evidenced by the many tourists who can be found at canvas and easel painting the beauty of the islands.

For the supreme art experience, visitors should stay at Le Meridien Tahiti which has a gallery and daily art classes. Guests are taught by local artists.

Guests can also learn how to cook, with lessons run by the executive chef.

The art and cuisine culture is found elsewhere throughout the islands.

The Papeete markets offer a plethora of fresh food including vegetables and fish as well as massage oils and woven bags. But you can’t go past the black pearlfamous black pearl.

Pearl farms are spread throughout French Polynesia.

The process commences by prying open an oyster ever so slightly to place the “nucleus”.

A small piece of oyster meat is also placed into the oyster.

The pearl takes two years to transform into its final form and its colour varies from the darkest black to pink, bronze, green and blue.

As you might expect, the price range varies enormously depending on the final colour, size and quality.

It takes eight hours to fly to Tahiti from eastern Australia. This is longer than other popular South Pacific destinations like New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.

As a result, it is seen as a ‘niche’ destination among travel suppliers who promote South Pacific holidays.

Other destinations get priority so it can be a lot of work to find the perfect Tahiti holiday.

This is where it is vital to know which website to trust. Travel Monitor has been built to help Australians find all the current travel deals, including a Tahiti holiday. The site is not associated with any travel companies so the packages are unbiased, current and accurate.

A Chinese tourist visa is a requirement of all U.S. citizens who wish to enter the mainland for tourism. While the Chinese consular services offers several differnt types of visas, this article will provide information on how to apply for a China tourist visa.

The Chinese embassy and consulates no longer accept visa applications by mail. You can submit the application yourself or get someone you know to do it for you. A family member, friend, travel agent or visa expediter can do this for you.

Chinese visas have validities of 3, 6 and 12 months. You can ask for a single, double or multiple entry visa. An additional travel permit is necessary in order to visit any non-open city. Visit the local security bureau in China to get this.

The China Tourist Visa

A China tourist visa, also known as an L visa, is usually valid for 30 days from the day of entry. An inspection agent will examine your documents upon your arrival. If everything is correct, they will be stamped with an entry seal. If you want to extend your stay after arriving in China, you need to apply to the local public security bureau.

You are allowed to enter China for sightseeing or visiting family and friends with a tourist visa. You need to request a Foreign Travel Permit at the local public security office if you would like to enter a restricted area.

Chinese Visa Requirements

The following items are required in order to obtain a tourist visa to China.

Completed Declaration Form

The Declaration Form became effective in May of 2009 and is a requirement for all those who are applying for a Chinese visa. You need to fill in your full name, nationality, passport number and the countries or U.S. states the applicant has visited during the two weeks prior to completing the form.

Your Current US Passport

You have to submit your current, valid and signed U.S. passport together with the tourist visa application. Your passport needs to have six months validity beyond your date that you arrive in China. Also, you should make sure you have at least one blank visa page in your passport.

A Passport-Style Photo

The siize of the photo has to be 2×2 inches. It is recommended that you obtain the photo at a location that has experience with passport photos. The photo will only be accepted by the consulate if it is high resolution, clear, and provides proper contrast with white background.

Completed Chinese Visa Application

The China visa application has seven sections. The first section is for personal information such as name, sex, nationality, date of birth, passport number, occupation, etc. The second section is reserved for data concerning your trip to China. You have to submit the reason for your trip, the number of entries you want, when you plan to arrive in China and how long you plan to stay.

Questions about your health and prior travel are found in Section 3. You need to include information about previous trips to China. Section 4 is reserved for contact information including home address, work or school address, address of your contact in China, phone numbers and email.

The fifth section is for additional declarations about your trip. If someone other than the applicant completed the form, the sixth section is used to provide information about that person. Finally, Section 7 is for the applicant’s signature.

How to Get Your China Tourist Visa Quickly

Regular processing of your visa to China can take 4 business days or more. Express and rush processing can be requested in you need to obtain your visa quickly. Express processing takes 2 to 3 business days. Rush process takes 1 business day. Both these expediting services require the payment of an additional fee.

If you are unable to travel to the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate general and do not have a friend or relative who can do it for you, then you will need to contract a private visa expediter. An expediter can submit your visa application and documents to the consulate for you. This allows you to get your China visa expedited as quickly as the same day.

Choosing Air Travel

Pros and Cons of Air Travel

Over the past few decades air travel has been becoming popular among people. Air travel is convenient and safe and these are the main reasons that have contributed to the increase in popularity of air travel.  The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

Pollution is the biggest problem caused by air travel.  Greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere by the aero planes and these gases are responsible for global warming. This is considered as a serious drawback by people who are keen to limit the effect of global warming on the universe.  Nowadays many airlines are taking necessary actions to reduce the global warming effect by becoming more conscious about the environment. One of the ways in which you could do this is by retrofitting winglet on the aircraft that makes the aircraft fuel efficient. In addition, many airlines have started upgrading their fleet of aero planes to modern fuel efficient aircraft by spending millions of dollars.

Disadvantage: High Cost

Another con that keeps people from traveling by air is cost.  It is cheaper to fill up gas in your car and drive to your desired destination instead of going by flight. By flying on discount
airline
it is possible to overcome this disadvantage of high cost. If you can find a good deal for airfare it can be the deciding factor for many people whether they will fly or drive.

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

Many people avoid flying for specific reasons. If anyone has travelled in a flight which has hit an air pocket you will see that they have gone through a lot of rough weather due to turbulence and this can be rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

traveling by air is much faster as compared to other means of transportation as long as these places are connected by air. While it can take days to drive across the United States, a person can fly the same distance in a number of hours.  This gives you extra days for enjoying your vacations because you save a number of days by traveling by air.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

In case you have to travel to far off destinations you will find that it is difficult to travel by any other mode other than air travel.  We can fly to any destination around the world. Although many of these flying times are very long you will still find that the total time taken is much shorter than the time that would have been spent by using alternate modes of transportation.

Advantage:  Safety

With regards to other forms of travel, air travel is considered to be one of the safest.  Car accidents wherein people die happen in thousands every year. Similarly, there is no dearth of train accidents. As regards to air travel related accidents you will find that the frequency of occurrences is relatively minimal. For many people safety is the prime consideration for choosing air travel as compared to other form of transportation.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here.  For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors.  As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.

Be Prepared For Wheelchair Travel

450 mm by 450 mm (18 in by 18 in) Handicapped ...
Image via Wikipedia

With more municipal emphasis on accessibility, more people of limited ability are rolling their way around the world enjoying the freedom of wheelchair travel. From walkways to buildings, people in wheelchairs are experiencing more freedom.

New laws are requiring that buildings and sidewalks be more accessible. There are now automatic door openers, ramps into buildings, curb cuts on street corners and doorways are generally wider. Advocates for the disabled lobbying for increased accessibility for travel have paved the way for a new generation of wheelchair travelers.

There are still many things to consider when making travel arrangements for disabled. With the increased public awareness, disabled people are discovering a whole new world beyond the confinement of their wheelchairs. They’re able to do more, go more places without running into obstacles. However, some advance planning still needs to be done when making arrangements to travel long distances.

If the destination is a remote region or a third world country, proper research must be undertaken. The accessibility of your airline and hotel has to be researched as does access to medical facilities, including pharmacies if you require prescription medication.

It’s a great idea to speak directly to a person at your hotel rather than making your reservation online. Inquire about accessibility and door widths in the room. As with anyone who travels, get a confirmation number for your reservation.

Check with your airline to see what type of service for disabled people they provide. Getting on the plane with a wheelchair is not generally a problem, but make sure the space provided for wheelchair passengers is available. Depending on your reasons for requiring a wheelchair, some airlines may request that you use one of their chairs and will offer to stow your chair under the plane with the luggage. If your personal wheelchair is stowed as luggage, what will happen if the luggage crew accidentally damages your chair, or what is the protocol if your chair ends up being lost or accidentally shipped elsewhere?

Some airlines may ask for a “fit to travel” certificate from your doctor, in which they must list the medications you’re taking, if any. This is also important when crossing international borders. This will assist in getting through customs or security with a minimum of disruption if you are found to be carrying prescription drugs.

Travel insurance is another area of concern for wheelchair travelers. This is key because often those bound to a wheelchair may have compromised immune systems making them vulnerable to all manner of viruses. There is also the possibility that a fall from the wheelchair could occur. Travel insurance should be extensive. With a bit of planning, traveling the world from the comfort of your wheelchair should be a very satisfying experience.

Five Reasons To Book A Lanzarote Holiday

Playa del Jablillo in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote...
Image via Wikipedia

Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. With an enduring appeal for visitors from Northern Europe.  And at just four hours flying time this is the closest winter sun option for tourists in countries such as the UK and Germany.  But what exactly is the appeal of the Island of Fire?

1) Climate

The key to Lanzarote´s popularity as a holiday destination lies in the fact that the island enjoys fantastic weather all year round. It´s situated just off the coast of Morocco. So there´s plenty of sunshine and very little rainfall.  Along with average temperatures of 22 Celsius.

This makes it warm enough to enjoy beach holidays and days by the pool all year round.

2) Beaches

There are close to 100 beaches dotting the coastline.  The three main resorts of Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen all boast striking stretches of sand.  But these playas are man made – using sand from the nearby Sahara.

So beach lovers in search of an all natural experience need to get out and explore.

Locals tend to agree that the most impressive beach on the island is Famara. Thanks to its sheer scale – as it measures nearly 8km long.  And because it is flanked by the impressive Famara massif range of cliffs.

Over popular playas includes the stretches of white sand which are collectively known as Caleton Blanco in the north of the island, on route to Orzola. As well as Playa de Garita – the pretty beach located in the seaside village of Arrieta.

3) Scenery

The scenery on Lanzarote really is unique and out of this world.  Thanks to the fact that the island was subjected to prolonged eruptions during the 18th century.  Which transformed the interior – replacing farming land with seas of solidified lava and burnt out volcanoes.

The rest of the island boasts a more conventional beauty.  With plenty of stunning spots such as the Valley of 1000 Palms and the Green Lagoon at El Golfo to explore.

4) Tourist Attractions

Mention Lanzarote and the name César Manrique soon crops ups.  His work adorns everything here from coffee mugs and car stickers through to roundabouts and hotel walls.

He also created Lanzarote´s main visitor attractions such as the Cactus Garden and the Jameos del Agua.  Whilst also campaigning for the controlled development of tourism.  Successfully securing bans on high rise buildings and ad hoardings in the process.

5) Accommodation

There are plenty of places to stay in Lanzarote.  The island offers everything from five star hotels through to studio apartments.

Holiday villas in Playa Blanca are especially popular.  As the growth of the internet means that tourists are now able to book their own accommodation direct online with the owners.  Reducing the cost of their holiday in Lanzarote.
